LAUC-I General Membership Meeting
Monday, 13 December 1999

1. Approval of Nov. 18 minutes.

• Motion to accept draft minutes: Collins. Seconded: MacDonald. Motion passed.

• This is Carolyn Gottneid's last LAUC-I meeting because of her retirement in January.
• Thanks to Roumiana Katzarkov for the refreshments.

• Wilson, Sisson, Collins, and Palmer attended the LAUC Fall Assembly in Santa Cruz on November 19. Wilson covered a few of the highlights of the assembly:
  • A resolution was passed thanking the University Librarians, the Library human relations staff, and the members of the LAUC Librarian Series Revison group.
  • The LAUC Spring Assembly will be on June 1 at UCSB.
  • The summary of charges to the statewide LAUC committees were handed out.
  • The Scholarly Communications Committee will be restructured as an editorial board for the web publication "New Horizons in Scholarly Communication" (http://libweb.ucsc.edu/scomm/index.html).
  • Be sure to look at the SLISIAC (Systemwide Library And Scholarly Information Advisory Committee) and SOPAG reports sent via email to you. The upcoming SOPAG website should be of great interest also.
  • Myron Okada from UCOP spoke to the assembly. He confirmed that in the upcoming UC budget a 2% COL and 1% parity increase for faculty was included as part of the budget request.
  • We had an interesting presentation about UC Merced by Karen Merritt. LAUC will have imput on the upcoming UL search for UCM. UCM is scheduled to open in 2005. (A handout was distributed to LAUC-I members).
  • A resolution was passed to honor the contributions of Rita Scherrei at UCLA, upon her retirement, for her contributions to LAUC.

• Wilson presented an overhead of the old and proposed new rank and salary scales. The most important differences are:
  1. Assistant Librarian steps drop from 6 to 3 steps, Associate Librarian remains at 7 steps, and Librarian goes from 5 to 7 steps.
  2. This is not a salary parity, but a salary restructure or realignment. The new salary scale was calculated so no one would lose money over 5 or 10 years. Librarians will be realigned according to their current salary, e.g. Assistant 3 will become the equivalent to Assistant I and Librarian 4 will become a Librarian II (depending on the outcome of the transistion plan).
  3. The life of the Librarian series has increased from 19 to 30 years.
  4. No one will have to repeat a "hurdle" review.
• Discussion ensued and ended with the plan for a further discussion when the transiton plan is presented.

• New charges for Professional Development and Program Committee were presented. Charges for Cultural Diversity and Academic Librarianship will be presented at a future meeting.

• LAUC-I is joining with Access on a gift certificate to a Bay Area architectuiral bookstore for Judith.

• January 10: UL Munoff will speak to LAUC-I on the interim arrangements in the library and the recruitment of new AULs.
• February 14: Professional Development Committee discussion.
