In making these interim arrangements I greatly benefited from the advice of the many people I consulted. I especially appreciate the cooperation and willingness of all those who have taken on additional responsibilities. Many other people will be affected to varying degrees during this time and we must rely on everyone's good will and cooperation. It may be that some work will slow down or be set aside during the interim, but we must continue to address the most important issues and take on new high priority initiatives. Our challenge is not simply to cope during this period, but to thrive and continue our progress during this period of change and growth.
For both divisions we are taking a shared team approach rather than appointing an acting AUL. Various individuals will represent the Libraries to outside groups, and we will announce these assignments later.
For Technical Services, the department heads: Diane Bisom, Vicky Grahame, Eric MacDonald, and Tim McAdam, will function as a team with Tim as leader, reporting to me. Beth Stinson will provide support to the team and the division and will report to Tim. To take advantage of Cynthia's expertise and guidance this arrangement will begin 3 January and will be phased in with Cynthia's assistance.
In Collections and Access we have developed a variety of arrangements which will be effective 20 December. Access Services will continue to be headed by Sara Eichhorn, reporting to me. She will be assisted by John Bareford who will assume library wide responsibilities.
The Collections Coordinating Committee (CCC) will assume daily responsibilities for collection development for all bibliographers. The current members, Ellen Broidy, Barb Lucas, and Carol Womack, will be joined by Lorelei Tanji who will represent the Libraries at the UC Committee on Collection Development and other groups as appropriate. Ellen will be team leader and report to me.
Jackie Dooley will continue to head Special Collections and Archives, reporting to me. Joan Jeffries-Row will continue her responsibilities for the division and will report to Jackie.
We have created new primary reporting structures for the five bibliographers who had previously reported to Judith Paquette. For the interim, Joan Ariel will report to Judy Kaufman; Ellen Broidy will report to me; and Anne Frank, Bill Wong, and Dan Tsang will report to Jackie Dooley.
The Administrative Team will not meet during the interim, making Library Council the main deliberative body for the Libraries.
We will attempt to minimize the ripple effect of the interim arrangements, but of course, many people will be affected in various ways as responsibilities shift and we find ways to accomplish essential work. I ask everyone's patience, good will, and cooperation. We need the assistance of everyone to make the interim arrangements work and at the same time to take on the considerable effort of a search for three AUL positions in a very short time. We may not be able to undertake all of the work we might otherwise have accomplished during this period, but we should embrace this as an opportunity to examine our policies, processes, and practices, and continue to try new approaches, and make changes and improvements.
