LAUC-I General Membership Meeting
Monday, 18 October 1999

1. Approval of Sept. 13 minutes.

• Minor changes regarding LAUC-I chair's memo to AEVC, Pat Price and UL noted.
• Motion to accept draft minutes as amended: Ford. Seconded: Sisson. Motion passed.

2. Report of 1999-10-07 LAUC Executive Board meeting in Oakland.

• SLASIAC meeting, 1999-09-23: Minutes available.
  • MELVYL system redesign
  • Space needs for UC libraries
• Vice Chancellors met on 1999-10-01; nothing new to report on Librarian Series revision at this point.
• Palmer explained new calendar for LAUC standing committees.
• New LAUC bylaws being worked on; to be voted on LAUC-wide in Spring 2000.

3. Professional Development Guidelines.

• Yang reviewed basic changes that the Professional Development Committee (PDC) made in the text of the Guidelines.
  • Base funding changes.
    • Base allocations may be used for purchase of professional development-related software and books.
    • These remain the physical property of The UCI Libraries.
    • Those requesting to use base allocations in this way need to work with Systems on all software purchases.
  • Other changes in wording to encourage timely submission of receipts to the Business Office so that unspent funds can be redistributed in a timely manner before money is lost.
• Desire expressed that Systems would like to monitor software purchases under these guidelines to see how it goes and what problems may crop up. Yang responded that PDC will work with Systems to track any software requests that come in in this year's professional development support requests.
• Clarification requested for approval process for books. Requests for professional development support to purchase books will use the same forms, go through the same process, and require the same signatures as all other requests for professional development support within The UCI Libraries.
• Grammatical corrections were suggested.
• Request was made that the minutes show that this was presented in shorthand; that there may still be some confusion in forms to be filled out and exact procedures to be followed, especially in obtaining required signatures for software (e.g., is requester or PDC responsible for Systems consultation and sign-off on request?); and that this is intended as an experiment for a year to see if anyone makes software or books requests.
• Motion to accept amendments to the Professional Development Guidelines: Palmer. Seconded: Sisson. Motion passed.

Informal notes taken by the LAUC-I Secretary during this discussion are available for informational purposes but are not part of the official minutes of this LAUC-I meeting. Session was tape recorded so that LAUC-I members who could not attend this meeting could hear UL's comments. After all interested LAUC-I members have borrowed it, this tape will be recorded over.
