1. LAUC-I Homepage.
A. Yang informed the membership of a member's proposal to cut down on email overuse by depositing LAUC and LAUC-I materials on the LAUC-I homepage. At the present there is no committee to oversee this issue, but A. Yang called for a volunteer from the membership to coordinate the formulation of guidelines on using the homepage as the main medium of information. There will be a follow up email to the membership on this issue.
2. 1996-1997 LAUC-I Election Slate.
B. Lucas circulated copies of the slate of candidates for this year's election for the membership's approval. There were no additional nominations, and J. Crooks moved to accept the slate with a unanimous vote by the membership in favor of approval. The ballots and candidate information will be forthcoming.
3. LAUC Spring Assembly.
A. Yang reported on the LAUC Spring Assembly which was held at UCI on 5/15. Issues discussed at the meeting included:
a) debate on the use of substitute librarians.
b) the need to have two LAUC assemblies a year in order to have more time for committee work and reports and also to orient new LAUC members; there will be a fall assembly 11/7-11/8, 1996 at a northern campus. It is planned that eventually there will be three meetings every two years.
c) the need for an educational forum to address issues such as virtual libraries.
d) the wide array of available computer workshops.
e) the need for more LAUC research.
f) low morale due to downsizing.
g) bifurcation and salary.
h) the stipend debate- LAUC is currently awaiting a response from the UCOP.
i) the recent comparative salary survey- questions about methodology.
j) how to address the "faculty first" attitude at many universities and the comparative worth of librarians.
k) the LAUC letter to the Regents regarding affirmative action-the Regents' response will be forwarded to the members via email.
l) the proposed change in bylaws to the use of the physical year.
m) the two featured speakers, Stewart Lynn and Charles Faulhaber. Mr. Faulhaber, the head of the Bancroft Library, emphasized the need for librarians to be aware of campus events and politics and that librarians must be more politically savvy and work closely with faculty who is the librarians' best advocate.
The membership extended their thanks and appreciation to B.Lucas and the local arrangement committee for all the hard work that madethis assembly a success.
