1. Special Guest Speaker- Jim Danziger, Dean of Undergraduate Studies Dr. Danziger addressed several key points in his presentation:
1) the main objective of the Department of Undergraduate Studies is to create an exciting and challenging university culture for the undergraduate population
2) the Department of Undergraduate Studies is similar to an academic unit in that it provides critical and fundamental services to students
3) the importance of information technology in education and the Library's significant role in facilitating and supporting the use of technology
4) the goal of blending the interests of a top research university while providing quality undergraduate education
5) the ongoing process of evaluating the quality of the undergraduate curriculum-including providing a more coherent freshman curriculum program, developing a capstone project for seniors, and improving undergraduate recruitment programs.
Dr. Danziger concluded with a question/answer session with the membership.
2. Chair's Report.
A. Yang reported on the following topics:
1) the Chancellor's luncheon on 2/29- the Chancellor addressed three main topics:
a) the proposed toll road, b) the computer policy committee report regarding funding allocations, and c) a new budgeting scheme and the need to develop a future enrollment growth plan regarding the ratio of undergraduate to graduate students
2) LAUC Spring Assembly-the local arrangements committee has begun preparations for the Assembly on 5/14, further information will be forthcoming
3) the LAUC-I laptop computer-copies of the proposed guidelines were circulated; the Academic Librarianship Committee will evaluate future guidelines and make recommendations for adjustments to hardware and software as necessary; if funds allow, a new laptop computer will be purchased this spring
3. LAUC-I Special Election.
The membership bid farewell to P. Lovett, after which A. Yang reminded the members of the coming special election to select a new Vice-Chair.
