LAUC-I Request for Representation on Library Council (Guest: J. Kaufman)

Library Council decided against the proposal of the Executive Board to have a LAUC-I
representative. Judy Kaufman attended to review the LC discussion and decision.

LC members expressed strong support for communication with all library staff. A large majority felt that having a LAUC-I representative was not the best way to achieve this. Departments are reviewing how they communicate within their departments. LC wants to focus on communication coming from the department heads.

Kaufman expressed her view that LAUC-I meetings don't welcome management and that department heads aren't welcome to give their point of view. In her opinion the agenda is dominated by personnel issues and she is always treated as an AUL rather than as another LAUC-I member.

If LAUC-I has an issue they want to bring to LC they can bring it directly to the UL.

Discussion:

Board members see problems in the organizational structure and possible differences in views on LAUC-I's function. What exactly does the UL see as LAUC-I's role? Is he in agreement with Article II, Section 3 of the by-laws, "To secure a voice in decision-making processes for librarians at UCI"? Need seen for Executive Board to meet with the UL to determine his views.
