Program 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

>>> DEADLINE: JUNE 1, 2001 <<<

Description

Join southern California librarians, library staff, and others at the UC Irvine campus for a program focusing on the changing social and political environment of access to government information. Researchers, scholars, undergraduates, and the general public rely on government publications, documents, databases, and historical records for facts, statistics/data, policies, speeches, etc. The speakers will discuss past, present, and possible future scenarios in how accessible--or inaccessible--this information has been and will be.

Speakers

Dr. Jon Wiener, Professor of History, University of California Irvine, and author of Gimme Some Truth: The John Lennon FBI Files (University of California Press, 2000).
Dr. Mark Petracca, Associate Professor of Political Science, and Chair of the Department of Political Science, University of California, Irvine, and frequent contributor to the LA Times
Ms. Kay Collins, US Government Information Librarian, University of California, Irvine; Member of the University of California Government Information Librarians Steering Committee; active in advocacy for access to government information.

About the Speakers

Dr. Jon Wiener
From Jon Wiener's website ( http://www.hnet.uci.edu/history/faculty/wiener ): "I've also spent considerable time since 1983 in a Freedom of Information lawsuit against the FBI for their files on John Lennon. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court before most of the outstanding issues were settled in 1997. The story of the litigation, and its fruits, are the subject of 'Gimme Some Truth: The John Lennon FBI Files,' published by the University of California Press in 2000. Tom Carson wrote in the Washington Post, 'As pure courtroom drama, Wiener's account of the fight to get the files released is often fascinating, with reversals and surprises.' The London Independent called it 'an extraordinary portrait of official paranoia.'" Read more about Gimme Some Truth, including its introduction and first chapter, on the UC Press website: http://www.ucpress.edu/books/pages/8721.html

Dr. Mark Petracca, Chair of the UCI Political Science Dept., has also been published in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and the Christian Science Monitor. Look up Petracca in a Lexis-Nexis search and as an author in the NEWS database. Read more about him on the Web at: http://www.faculty.uci.edu/scripts/UCIFacultyProfiles/DetailDept.CFM?ID=2468

Ms. Kay Collins works with AALL (Amer. Assn. of Law Libns), UC Government Information Librarians Steering Committee, with UC lobbyists in Washington, D.C., and with local government liaisons to address issues of access to government information. Her talk, "Follow the Money," will address funding for publications in various formats, depository libraries, government studies and policies regarding fundamental changes in information distribution, private publishers statements of no government competition, archiving web sites, privacy, FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) and a touch of politics.
