Professional Activities
- Librarian's Professional Development
- Mentoring
The UCI Libraries and LAUC-I have been working
hard to foster an "environment
of mentoring" here at UCI. The LAUC-I Professional Development
Committee developed a document articulating our goals for mentoring
which include: providing all librarians new to the organization with
opportunities to become involved in a mentor/mentee relationships,
recognizing those who participate in mentoring relationships, and articulating
the responsibility that librarians at all levels have to assist their
colleagues in becoming successfully involved in professional organizations.
- Career Recruitment and Outreach
The LAUC-I Career
Recruitment and Outreach Program aims to promote the awareness and
pursuit of careers in libraries, archives, and other information
organizations
among students and library staff. Initiated in 2003, this program
grew out of the recognition that our profession faces a critical shortage
of trained librarians, archivists and other information professionals.
It is expected that over the next 5-10 years, more than one-quarter
of the nation’s 125,000 librarians will retire,
providing significant opportunities for graduates with a Masters of
Library Science (MLS) degree or its equivalent. Through programming
and other publicity, LAUC-I is actively working to encourage interest
in careers in libraries, archives, and other information organizations
-- careers which are dynamic and important, all the more so in an “information
age” marked by rapidly changing technologies, the globalization
of communication, and the increasing
diversity of our communities. Our recruitment brochure is
widely disseminated on campus and we have initiated collaborative
programming with the UCI Career Center. The success of this program
already is
apparent in the increasing number of students who are contacting
our the UCI Libraries Career Resource Librarians to discuss careers
in
libraries and archives as well
as graduate programs and applications.
