Campus Involvement
- Academic
Senate
Through the Librarian's Association of the University of California
Irvine (LAUC-I), librarians are represented on many UCI Academic
Senate Councils, Action Committees, Governance Committees,
Advisory Panels, and Special Committees. This affords LAUC-I
and the UCI Libraries an exceptional opportunity to participate
in and contribute to campus governance and initiatives. Key
committees in which we participate include:
- Council on Educational Policy
- Graduate Council
- Council on Planning and Budget
- Council on Research, Computing
and Library Resources
- Action Committee on Courses
- Action Committee on Teaching

- Collaboration
with Faculty
The UC Irvine Libraries, led by the Department
of Education and Outreach, values and supports the ideal of collaborating
with faculty
to provide
multiple learning opportunities for students at all levels from undergraduate
through graduate and professional and in all disciplines. The goal of
the Libraries
Information Literacy Initiative is to
partner with faculty in order to teach information literacy as an integrated
part of the course
curriculum. Examples of successful collaboration include the libraries’ contributions
to the Writing 39C and the Humanities Core Course, two large courses
both of which fulfill the lower-division writing requirement at UCI.
The Writing
39C research skills sessions and the Humanities
Core Discovery Tasks, are two models for library instruction that
introduce students to basic concepts in information literacy. The goal
of partnering with
faculty in the lower-division writing program is to teach student baseline
information literacy concepts which will serve as a foundation for further
instruction in more
sophisticated resources and competencies. Research
librarians work with the faculty in their liaison
departments to identify
further teaching and learning opportunities that will enhance student
learning outcomes in discipline specific courses. In addition, various
courses have
been taught by librarians. Informatics is deeply embedded in the curriculum
of the Medical School
and supported
by the
Libraries’ Medical
Education librarians.
In addition to collaboration in the area of instruction, librarians also
support faculty and graduate student research through their collection
development and research consultation activities. The Libraries' Scholarly
Communication Program provides a framework to develop opportunities for
partnership and sustained collaboration on scholarly communication issues
with other interested UCI academic community members. Exhibits curated
by librarians and faculty highlight significant, unusual, beautiful and
unique materials held by the Libraries. Subject librarians provide a
bibliography
for each of the Fellows in the Chancellor's Distinguished
Fellows Series. The bibliographies are available in print at the Langson
and Science Libraries and at each public event. Special Collections and
Archives houses the papers
of distinguished UCI faculty including Nobel
laureate and physicist Frederick Reines, philosopher and theorist Jacques
Derrida, choreographer Donald McKayle, Deans of Biological Sciences Edward
A. Steinhaus and Howard A. Schneiderman, digital artist Christine Tamblyn,
and all former UCI Chancellors. Faculty papers contain valuable information
on teaching, research, professional activities, and personal files which
offer unique perspectives on both the individual faculty members and
the university's academic community in general.
Successful faculty/librarian collaboration and partnerships are essential
as we work to sustain the Libraries’ integral role in the University’s
teaching and research mission. Faculty, students and librarians all
benefit from the synergy that results from our best collaborative efforts.
