1997-98 LAUC Research Call and Calendar

     November 17, 1997

     To: LAUC Members
     From: Kari Lucas, Vice-president/President-elect
Subject: Second Call for Research Proposals, 1997/98

I am pleased to issue a second Call for Research Proposals for the
University-wide Research Grants for Librarians for 1997/98. The
attached calendar indicates the dates for submission and evaluation
     of proposals.

Please consider developing a research proposal. Past projects have
been exciting and innovative, often leading to publication. Research
funds allow University of California librarians a unique opportunity
to engage in scholarly research and creative activity which enhances
our contributions to the University and our profession. Lists of
previously approved projects are available from your divisional
research committees who are always willing to help in the development
     of new research projects.

Please note that proposals must be submitted to the Chair of your
divisional research committee by January 16, 1997 in two forms--an
electronic version that can be e-mailed and a paper application with
any required signatures. We are trying to speed up communications
and reduce workload through the use of email.

Electronic versions of guidelines, forms, and instructions are
at this site and from the following:

NOTE: Be sure to download the cover sheet, guidelines and checklist.

Funding for projects approved by R&PDC and the Office of the
President will be available July 1, 1998. Projects should be planned
for implementation after that date. Also, since rolling over funds is
not a routine process, funds should be spent during the year for
     which they are awarded.

Remember that you may request funds to cover the cost of a
replacement so that you may take time off to do your research.
The level and length of this replacement is negotiated individually
on a case by case basis. If your proposal includes replacement
funding, this must be discussed with your immediate supervisor, AUL
and University Librarian prior to the submission of the request, and the
University Librarian must sign on the paper copy, cover sheet to
     approve "released time."
